The sand that a machine throws sideways on the East Rim was once a desert far larger than the Sahara. Navajo sandstone, the pale cliff rock that defines Zion, began as a dune sea drifting across the western edge of Pangaea roughly 180 million years ago. Wind laid it down in slanting beds. Access is a modern arrangement rather than an old one.
